Celebrating in the Senedd: 75 years of live music

On Tuesday 14 March we were joined by health and care professionals and some of our musicians at the Pierhead Building to celebrate our 75th year and showcase the connections made through live music for people with dementia, mental health and serious illness.

Our Chief Executive, Barbara Osborne and our Trustee, Angharad Thomas, welcomed everyone to the celebrations.

A panel discussion was hosted by Claire Owen, our Head of Music Delivery, alongside Esyllt George, Arts in Health Coordinator for Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, Kathryn Lambert, Arts in Health Coordinator for Hywel Dda University Health Board, and Tim Nicholls, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Mental Health Services for Older People, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. They discuss the key ingredients for the success of live music in health and care settings and how we can work together to bring the healing power of music to those who need it most.

Some of our fantastic musicians shared the live music they play in different health and care settings; singer guitarist duo Huw and Mel for care homes, harpist Delyth Jenkins for serious illness, singer guitarist Nick Russell for dementia, and harp and violin duo Marged and Angharad for mental health settings.

We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who joined us including our musicians, arts and health professionals and Eluned Morgan, Member of the Senedd for Mid and West Wales and Minister for Health and Social Services. Special thanks also go to Jayne Bryant, Member of the Senedd for Newport West and Chair of the Cross Party Working Group for Arts and Health, for sponsoring the event.
