The charity

Music in Hospitals & Care (MiHC) works with a wide range of people who, due to health conditions or disability, are unable to access or experience live music within their local communities.

From babies to centenarians, and everyone in between, we engage with people of all ages providing specially tailored performances and music sessions to suit their tastes and needs.

We bring live music to care settings across the whole of the UK. From the Shetland Isles and the Highlands of Scotland to Northern Ireland, the Valleys of Wales and down to the south coast of England we operate in hospitals, hospices, care homes, day centres, special schools and community settings too.

Musicians

MiHC selects talented professional musicians from a wide variety of musical backgrounds. From folk to funk, and opera to jazz, around 450 instrumentalists and singers from across the UK are at the frontline of our service.

Musicians are chosen following a rigorous audition for their excellent musicianship, first rate communication skills and a highly sensitive approach which is flexible to the needs of their audience members.

Our beginnings

MiHC began in 1948. The idea of a project bringing live music into hospitals was launched following the closure of the Entertainments National Services Association (ENSA) in 1946. Officially launched in January 1948 with a grant of £1,000 from The Ex-Services Mental Welfare Association, ‘The Council for Music in Hospitals’ was established, focusing its work in mental and orthopaedic hospitals and TB sanatoria.

Today, our name is Music in Hospitals & Care and we are proud to reach over 100,000 people in care each year. The small addition to our name demonstrates that we work in many different care settings as well as in hospitals. As ever, we aim to overcome barriers which prevent people, regardless of their health or well-being, from accessing the benefits of live music. We continue striving to improve the quality of people’s lives, one tune at a time.
